What does "Give Me 10" mean? Good question! Before Give Me 10 was working actively in our community all year long, we started out collecting food to send home with students over winter break in 2013. We asked friends to donate 10 nonperishable food items, $10, or to share about what we were trying to do with 10 people. We called the food drive Give Me 10. Since our community responded so generously, we did the same thing again for spring break in 2014. About this time we realized this needed to be an ongoing effort and the name just stuck! We also really like giving high fives... and whats better then giving someone 5? Giving someone 10.

How do you determine what families you will serve? We are currently working exclusively with families who have children who attend traditional public schools in East Nashville. We love all of Nashville and want to see needs met throughout the entire city. We also love community and have seen the power a community can have when it comes together to support one another, which is why we choose to focus on our neighborhood. We currently connect with families in need through social workers, principals, teachers, and school counselors. Those people act as a go between between us and the family we are serving.

What is a food desert? Food deserts can be described as geographic areas where residents’ access to affordable, healthy food options (especially fresh fruits and vegetables) is restricted or nonexistent due to the absence of grocery stores within convenient travelling distance.
